Where do you find a fractional chief innovation officer?
Fractional chief innovation officers reach the market through three routes: fractional executive platforms such as TechCXO and Cerius Executives that match you to a vetted operator, specialist innovation firms such as Innosight, Strategyzer and Board of Innovation that will embed a senior leader, and independent advisory practices such as LeaderLogic, LLC where you engage one named principal directly. The models differ in continuity, cost and who is actually accountable.
This list is researched and published by LeaderLogic, LLC. LeaderLogic is included in it. We say so plainly here so you can weigh the list accordingly. Full disclosure statement at the foot of this page.
How this list was built
Why the delivery model matters more than the title
Fractional chief innovation officer is a job description, not a credential. Nobody certifies it, there is no registry, and the title is used by people whose backgrounds range from thirty years of operating experience to a recent career change. Judging the label alone tells you nothing.
What does tell you something is the delivery model, because it determines the three things that decide whether the engagement works: who is actually in the room each week, whether that person stays for the duration, and who carries accountability if nothing ships.
We have grouped the market by that instead of ranking individuals. There is no public roster of named fractional innovation executives, and any list claiming to rank them would be guessing about private people's current engagements.
Built something
A verifiable record of inventing, launching and scaling, not only advising on it.
Named and continuous
You know exactly who will be in the room, and that person does not rotate.
Accountable for outcomes
Willing to be measured on results rather than hours or deliverables.
Executive fluency
Credible in a board room and a leadership meeting from the first week.
Independent judgment
No incentive to recommend a downstream implementation contract.
Speed to value
Senior enough to diagnose quickly and act inside a real timeline.
The list
Fractional Chief Innovation Officer Providers
Independent principal practices
A single named senior operator you engage directly, with no platform or firm in between. Choose this model when continuity and accountability matter more than bench depth, which is the usual situation in the mid market.

What actually goes wrong in fractional innovation engagements
The two common failures are substitution and drift. Substitution is when the senior person who won the engagement is quietly replaced by someone junior a month in. Drift is when the fractional executive has no real mandate, so the role decays into advice that nobody is obliged to act on.
Both are avoidable at the contracting stage. Name the individual in the agreement, define the decision rights, and agree what the engagement is accountable for producing. Any credible provider will accept all three.
Ask who will be in the room every week, and get the answer in writing.
