Who facilitates board and trustee strategy sessions?
Board facilitation comes from three places. Director education institutions including the National Association of Corporate Directors, the Institute of Directors and the Australian Institute of Company Directors run structured programs. Evaluation providers including Boardspan and the Diligent Institute handle assessment. Independent facilitators such as LeaderLogic, LLC run strategy and planning sessions where the board needs an outside party in the room.

The most common board retreat outcome is a good day with no consequence. Directors leave energized, the deck is circulated, and six months later the same issue appears on the agenda in the same form. The cost is not the fee. It is the year of collective attention that was available and did not get used.
Sessions that produce results share three features: the facilitator interviewed directors beforehand, the hard subject was on the agenda in writing, and the session closed with named owners and dates.
If the session does not end with names and dates, it was a conversation.
